Card Grading Calculator — Is Grading Worth It? Do the Math

"Is my card worth grading?" isn't a feeling — it's arithmetic. Grade it if the graded value minus the fees beats the raw value; skip it if it doesn't. The formula takes three numbers, and every one of them is free to get. Here's the calculation, step by step.

The formula, plainly

Grade when: (expected grade's selling price) − (grading fees + shipping) > (raw card's selling price). If the raw card sells for $40 and grading costs $30 all-in, the graded card needs to clear $70 — at every grade level you might get.

Number 1: your expected grade

The formula lives or dies on the grade. A free pre-grade projects the grade in seconds — if your card pre-grades low, the calculation is over before it starts.

Number 2: the price gap between grades

Pull the comps at each grade for your card. If a PSA 9 and PSA 10 sell nearly the same, grading buys you nothing; if the 10 sells for triple, grading is buying something real.

Compare prices by grade →

Number 3: the raw value floor

The raw selling price is your fallback. High-value raw cards tolerate grading risk; a $5 card almost never earns its fees back. Check the raw comps before anything else.

Worth-It FAQ

Is my card worth grading?

Run the math: expected graded price minus all-in grading costs versus the raw price. If you don't know the expected grade, pre-grade free first — it's the number the whole decision hinges on.

What's the rule of thumb for grading?

Grade cards that pass three checks: a high pre-grade, a real price gap between grade levels, and a raw value high enough to absorb the fees. Miss any one and keep the card raw.

Should I grade low-value cards?

Almost never — a $10 card can't recover $25–$35 in all-in grading costs. Exceptions are cards whose graded versions sell wildly above raw, and even those need the comps check first.

Does grading always increase value?

No — grading a card that comes back low can actually cap its value, since the grade is now on the record. That's the core reason to pre-grade before submitting.
