Card Condition Check — Score Your Card's Condition Free

"What condition is my card in?" is the question behind every card's price — condition swings value by multiples. Here's how condition is actually judged: the four criteria graders score, the honest way to eyeball each one yourself, and the free check that scores your specific card from a photo.

Centering — the first thing everyone sees

Compare the borders. Graders measure the front borders' ratio — a card with 60/40 centering reads fine to most eyes, while an 80/20 card screams off-center. Centering is the most objective of the four criteria.

Corners — where grades go to die

Look at each corner under good light: sharp points, or whitening, dings, and fraying? One bad corner caps the whole grade — corners are the most common reason cards grade lower than owners expect.

Edges — the hidden wear zone

Run your eye along all four edges. Whitening, chipping, and rough cuts show up here, especially on vintage stock. Edge wear is often invisible from the front and obvious on the back.

Surface — the judge of fine print

Print lines, scratches, fogging, stains, and dimples — surface flaws are the hardest for amateurs to spot and the easiest for graders to find. Tilt the card under a light and look.

Card Condition FAQ

How do I check my card's condition?

Check the four criteria graders score — centering (borders), corners (sharpness), edges (whitening/chipping), and surface (print lines, scratches) — under good light, front and back. Or snap a photo and get all four scored free.

What do condition terms like NM and MT mean?

Mint (MT) is essentially flawless; Near Mint (NM) allows minor flaws; Excellent (EX) shows visible wear; Very Good (VG) and below carry creasing or heavy wear. Grading companies translate these into the 1–10 scale.

Can I check card condition from a photo?

Yes — a good photo is exactly what free pre-grading uses to score centering, corners, edges, and surface and flag the specific blemishes holding the grade down.

Which condition flaw hurts a card's value most?

Creases, by far — they alone can drop a card multiple grades. After creases: corner dings, edge whitening, and surface print defects, roughly in that order.
