iCollecta Technical White Paper

The SlabLab Kiosk

A physical acquisition engine: automatically graded retail for the collecting hobby, wired directly into the iCollecta platform

Version 1.0 · September 2026 · Patrick Daniels, Founder & CEO, iCollecta

1. Executive Summary

The SlabLab Kiosk is a self-service retail machine for the collecting hobby: a single physical unit that dispenses trading cards, sealed hobby boxes and packs, mystery packs and iCollecta repacks, and graded cards. It is a vending channel for the products collectors already buy — placed where they already are.

What makes SlabLab proprietary is not the dispensing. It is the integration. Every unit carries a SlabVision grading station: a customer who pulls a card from a pack can scan it on the spot and receive a predicted grade with centering, corners, edges, and surface sub-scores in seconds. And every purchase requires an email address at checkout — which automatically registers the customer for a free account on the iCollecta web platform.

The economics are deliberate: new customers receive 20% off their first kiosk purchase, and existing iCollecta members receive 10% off every kiosk purchase, every time. The discount is the incentive; the email capture is the mechanism; the auto-created account is the outcome. Each machine is a branded acquisition terminal that funds its own user growth through product sales.

2. The Gap: Anonymous Retail

Hobby retail today is anonymous. A collector buys a pack or a graded card from a shop, a show, or a vending machine — and walks away with product but no digital relationship. The seller learns nothing about the buyer; the buyer is never routed to the tools that would make them a long-term customer of anything. Collectible vending machines exist, but none tie the machine to a platform.

SlabLab closes that loop. It applies the same capture-route-convert design that powers iCollecta's NetGrid search engine — but executes it in physical retail, at the exact moment of purchase.

3. The Machine

A single SlabLab unit combines four functions:

  • Retail dispensing — sealed hobby boxes and packs, mystery packs and iCollecta's own repack product line, graded cards, and select singles.
  • SlabVision scan bay — a side-mounted scanning station where a customer scans a freshly pulled card and receives a pre-grade with centering, corners, edges, and surface sub-scores in seconds. The "did I hit?" moment happens at the machine.
  • Email-captured checkout — every purchase requires an email address, which the kiosk uses to identify the customer and apply their discount automatically.
  • Platform handshake — that email address registers (or locates) the customer's free iCollecta web account on the spot.

The unit is designed for unattended placement: card-payment enabled, screen-led product browsing, and a hardware platform sized for high-traffic venues. Official industrial-design renderings are available from the company on request.

4. The Digital Funnel — the Core IP

The kiosk's defensible asset is the funnel wired into every transaction:

  • Purchase → email capture at checkout.
  • Email capture → automatic free account creation on the iCollecta web platform (or instant recognition of an existing member).
  • Discount economics → 20% off the first purchase converts walk-up strangers into registered users; 10% off every purchase keeps existing members returning to the machine and the platform.
  • Post-purchase → the customer's new account already holds the platform's core hooks: live comps pricing, collection portfolio tracking, the marketplace, and SlabVision scan history.
  • Monetization → free accounts convert to paid tiers (Rookie, All-Star, Legend, and Legendary Business) through normal platform usage.
Every machine is a branded acquisition terminal. The 20% first-purchase discount is an acquisition cost paid only when revenue changes hands — the machine funds its own user growth.

5. Placement Strategy & Revenue Lines

  • Card shops — partner placements that bring the kiosk's technology to established venues.
  • Card shows and conventions — coordinated with iCollecta's show-sponsorship program and mined show-director pipeline.
  • Malls, arenas, stadiums, and family entertainment centers — high-foot-traffic retail placement.
  • Comic and game stores — adjacency to the full collectibles audience.

Each placement produces multiple revenue lines: product margin on dispensed inventory, subscription upgrades from auto-created accounts, partner placement revenue, and on-screen advertising. The directory's claimable shop listings (see the Shop Directory white paper) recruit the venues; the kiosks convert their foot traffic.

6. The Physical + Digital Flywheel

For investors, SlabLab matters for one structural reason: it gives iCollecta a customer-acquisition channel with near-zero marginal cost at the point of sale. The NetGrid captures demand online; the kiosk captures it offline — and both feed the same account, the same portfolio, and the same subscription funnel. Physical placement grows the registered user base daily, in venues the company already reaches through its directory and show-sponsorship pipelines.

Prototype construction is underway with manufacturing partners in the Southeast U.S., with pilot placement planned alongside the show-sponsorship rollout. The kiosk program shares the philosophy behind the entire platform: owned acquisition infrastructure — engines that keep producing users — rather than rented attention.
